vicfangirlguide: In 1838 the SS Sirius became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. It undertook the voyage to try to beat Brunel’s ship The Great Western. Unfortunately halfway through the trip the Sirius ran out of coal and the crew were forced to burn every piece of furniture, every wooden door and even one of the masts in order to reach New York first.
